Abstract
This study examines the interplay between house typology and Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) in Kisi, Nigeria—a region with distinct cultural and architectural contexts. Employing a mixed-method approach, data were collected through structured surveys, semi-structured interviews, and physical measurements across 154 dwellings representing six primary residential typologies. Parameters such as lighting, ventilation, temperature, and humidity were analysed. Results indicate substantial differences in IEQ across housing types, with traditional earth-sheltered compound houses demonstrating superior thermal comfort and passive ventilation, while modern concrete homes excelled in natural lighting due to optimized window design. The findings emphasize the need for architectural and policy interventions that integrate climatic responsiveness and cultural appropriateness to promote occupant well-being. This study contributes to a nuanced understanding of how vernacular and contemporary building forms affect IEQ in rapidly urbanizing African settings.
