Abstract

The growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives to conventional building materials, due to their significant carbon footprint, coupled with the environmental threat posed by massive seaweed accumulation in aquatic ecosystems and its impact on tourism, has sparked interest in exploring seaweed’s potential for construction. This study specifically investigates the cementitious properties of Sargassum natans, a species of brown macroalgae. X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis was employed to determine the elemental composition and concentrations in Sargassum natans. The results show the concentration of certain chemical compounds similar to cement, notably: SiO2 – 41.64%, Fe2O3 – 3.08%, CaO – 29.89%, Al2O3 – 2.72%. However, CaO and Al2O3 concentrations were notably lower than typical cement, while SiO2 concentration was significantly higher. Fe2O3 level fell within the range of standard cement. These findings suggest Sargassum natans could serve as a partial cement substitute, offering potential as a supplementary binder. This discovery has significant implications for green building practice, utilizing local materials to improve the strength and durability of buildings, while reducing energy consumption and promoting eco-friendly living.
