Abstract
Municipal solid waste (MSW) management remains a significant global environmental issue, with far-reaching effects on sustainability, public health, and economic growth. Reliable data on MSW generation and composition are crucial for creating effective waste management systems. This study utilized field observations, surveys, and analytical methods to evaluate MSW generation, composition, and transportation within the University of Ibadan (UI). Findings indicate an average daily waste generation rate of 0.34 kg per person. The composition analysis shows that organic waste (37.9%) and polythene bags (30.7%) constitute the largest portions, followed by plastics (23.2%) and other materials (8.2%). The study offers important insights into the current MSW situation at UI and supports the development of improved strategies such as waste minimization, recycling, and composting. Route optimization analysis demonstrated a potential reduction of 24.5% in travel distance and 35.7% in travel time, thereby lowering operational costs, enhancing efficiency, and reducing environmental impact. Ultimately, this promotes a more sustainable waste management system within the university.
