Abstract
Solid waste obscenity on the major roads in Ibadan, the Capital city of Oyo State, has mere the face of governance in the state for so long. The peak of this eyesore saw Oyo state being consistently ranked among the Dirtiest States in Nigeria (DSiN). Some of the identified obstacles to sustainable solid waste management in the state were inadequate budgetary, dilapidated/non-existent infrastructures, lack of policy, non-synchronizing the chain of procedures, research deficit, in-availability of statistics bank, untrained/ill-trained personnel among others. The state government, in the quest to change the narratives, researched, developed, and implemented a number of strategies which include – re-engineering of road infrastructures (and junction remodeling), economic revamping through prompt strategic investments (ERPSI), prime timing waste collection (PTWC), efficient public outreach programmes (EPOP), waste scavenging (WS), resuscitation and revitalization of waste management infrastructures (dumpsites) (RRWMI/D), and effective enforcement and sanction (EES). The success of these efforts has resulted in ranking Oyo State among the top 10 cleanest States in Nigeria in 2024.
