
Assessment of Occupants Satisfaction with Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) of Selected Public Healthcare Facilities in Osun State, Nigeria

Abstract
This study assessed the IEQ of selected public healthcare facilities in Osun State, Nigeria with a view to determining their impacts on occupant satisfaction with the healthcare facilities in the study area. The study utilized both objective (physical measurement) and subjective (questionnaire survey) approach. A total of five (5) public healthcare facilities were purposively selected consisting of three primary, one secondary and one tertiary healthcare. The study further stratified the study population consisting of hospital patience, visitors, medical practitioners’ and support staff into 258 out of which 188 respondents were randomly selected as the sample size. The result of physical measurement of some IEQ variables, using relevant environmental device shows that the averages of temperature level, relative humidity and illuminance are (31.40C, 30.10C, and 30.80C); (40.0%, 46.7% and 42.2%) (150lux, 117.3lux and 137.0lux) respectively for the selected healthcare facilities. Only relative humidity was found to be within the recommended standard (ASHRAE, 2021) of 30.0-60.0%. Similarly, the average temperature of the selected healthcare facilities was observed to be slightly above 20.0-24.0OC values recommended by ASHRAE (2021). Similarly, an absolute majority of more than 80.0% of the occupants were satisfied with the IEQ and thermal comfort, 65.0% of the respondents are satisfied with the acoustic comfort, but larger percentage of more than 70.0% of the respondents are dissatisfied with the lighting comfort, temperature and water quality of the selected healthcare facilities. The study concluded that, only humidity meets recommended IEQ standards, other factors such as illumination, temperature, water quality falls below recommended standards which could influence the occupants’ well-being. The study recommends further research in healthcare facilities particularly during raining season in the study area and future designs of healthcare facilities should integrates better IEQ variables particularly for temperature and illumination.
