Evaluation of Herdersmen Farmers Crisis in Surulere Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract
This study evaluates the herdsmen-farmers crisis in Surulere Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria, focusing on its causes, nature, and the community’s responses. With a sample size of 285 participants, selected from the affected wards within the Local Government Area, the research utilized a combination of surveys, and focus group discussions to identify the significant factors contributing to the conflict. Descriptive statistics, percentages, weighted mean indices, five-point likert scale measures and logistic regression was used to analyze the main variable contributing to the farmers-herders clash, where 10 of the 12 independent variables assessed were statistically significant (crop damage by cattle, water pollution indiscriminate bush burning and unwanted provocation), and had a strong affinity (p<0.01) with conflict. The study also highlights nature of crisis by exploring various types of conflict, which are public unrest/riot (2.71), displacement from property (2.99), breach of public peace (3.09), disruption of agricultural activity and livestock rearing (3.12), and arson (3.59) all having index value greater than the mean value of 2.45. Community responses to the conflict include various informal and formal conflict resolution methods, with a significant reliance on traditional and local institutions. However, dissatisfaction with the effectiveness of these institutions is prevalent, indicating the need for improved conflict resolution strategies. The study concludes by recommending enhanced security measures, revision of land use policies, and the promotion of cooperative frameworks to mitigate the conflict and promote peaceful coexistence.
