Abstract

A successful construction project has many important components, one of which is labour. Many The soil investigated in this study for suitability checks as liners and covers material was a crude oil contaminated (COC) soil treated using Electrokinetic technique. The contaminated soil was remediated with 0.05M of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) at the anode chamber and sodium sulphate (Na2SO4) varied at 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20M respectively at the cathode chambers and at a constant voltage of 30 Volts. Graphite electrodes were employed for the electrokinetic remediation. The index properties, specific gravity, and the compaction characteristics of the contaminated and remediated soil were investigated. The soil is classified as A-7-6 according to AASHTO classification system and belongs to clay of low plasticity CL or OL group according to the Unified Soil Classification System. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the remediated soil samples were compared with the regulatory standards by most agencies and found to be above 200KN/m2. The TPH removal efficiency for the remediated soil was 42.55% for EKRA, 48.94% for EKR- B, 58.51% for EKR- C and 67.02% for EKR- D respectively. Hydraulic conductivity and the volumetric shrinkage strain have been a key engineering parameter used in  evaluating the performance of potential material for use as waste containment facility; and these were also investigated for the remediated soil samples. It is recommended that the remediated soil at WAS and BSH compactive efforts can be employed as waste containment facility only when the material is compacted and placed as instructed.
